I purchased a kimber custom II a couple of weeks ago after deliberating on which company most deserved my business. I narrowed my choices down to STI Spartan V, SA Loaded, and the Kimber Custom II. I wasn't crazy about the sights on the STI because after reliability has been proven I like my firearms for not only target but self defense and carry as well. So I was able to appreciate the more smooth sights of the Kimber.
I read many poor reviews, and heard remarks from friends of friends on all three firearms and many praising all three. After narrowing it down to the kimber and the loaded, I strictly went with the Kimber because it was about $100 cheaper. I was able to put that cash into a pair of Chip McCormick slim carry rosewood grips, and 3 power mags. I'm left still wanting the loaded and one day it will be mine, perhaps in SS.
The Kimber’s workmanship is easy to see and feel. Everything fits together and functions perfectly. In terms of finish, I give the Kimber Custom II only a grade of B+; their Parkerizing process seems a bit thin in many places. I’m also not a big fan of rubber grips (which are being replaced with G10 this week) or Kimber’s short MIM (metal injection molding) slide release (which has already been replaced by a Wilson Combat extended release). But the Custom II’s overall look and feel is top notch.
I'm new to the forum, but not new to guns. I'm really, really new to buying guns off the internet, usually my purchases over the last 40 years have been face to face with the gun in hand, hence my questions about a gun I have not seen "in the flesh" so to speak.
I recently had the opportunity to buy a new Kimber Custom II Two Tone, with the stainless steel frame and carbon steel slide at what I thought was an okay price of $699 delivered. So, I put the gun on layaway. It seems like a very good looking handgun.
